The Detroit post-punk four-piece return with the follow-up to 2015's brilliant The Agent Intellect which is also their first LP on Domino Records. Relatives in Descent is inspired by The Raincoats' Odyshape Mica Levi's orchestral compositions and Protomartyr's recent collaboration with post-punk legends The Pop Group. It's a record full of pent-up frustration a nervous energy and a poignant urgency from vocalist Joe Casey's monotone deadpan delivery interspersed between spouts of manic shouting to the jagged guitars metronomic drumming and driving basslines. Though not a concept album it presents twelve variations on a theme: the unknowable nature of truth and the existential dread that often accompanies that unknowing. This at a moment when disinformation and garbled newspeak have become a daily reality.
