When Dublin's David Balfe released his debut self-titled album, For Those I Love, we were absolutely floored by his intense, honest and heartbreaking punk-fuelled electroncia masterpiece. Carving the Stone sees Balfe focusing on his local inner-Dublin area and the characters that make it what it is and the dark capitalist forces eroding it. Musically, it has a more organic sound, yet still hits just as hard and matches the intensity of its predecessor. Lyrically, Balfe is unmatched. Our love of Far Caspian is no secret. His 2021 debut album 'Ways To Get Out' was our album of the year that year and his previous album, 'The Last Remaining Light', was our album of the month in July 2023. As Far Caspian, the Irish musician Joel Johnston creates some sort of melancholic alchemy of familiar sounding analog-spun 90's-nodded indie-rock that sends vivid childhood-shivers down your spine. Back in April 2019, when we made Club Night's debut album 'What Life' our VENUS VINYL OF THE MONTH, we never thought we'd have to wait this long for the follow-up & in all honest had sadly assumed they had called it a day. So it was a special moment when we were treated to another dose of their unique blend of emo, math-rock, indie-rock, noise-rock & post-hardcore. 'Joy Coming Down' really hit us in the early-mid-00s feels with its sonic similarities to the early works of the likes of Moneen, Coheed & Cambria, & Alexisonfire. Yet there is still that modern hit with the chaotic noise of contemporaries in Spirit of the Beehive & the 90's tinged indie-rock of Strange Ranger (both previous label mates). Most underrated band out there? I'd say so!

On 'The Ribbon Songs', Tiernan takes front and centre stage, more out of a need for cathartic exercise - for each track on the album delicately displays itself with such fragile beautiful, there is a sense of voyeuristic guilt! In contrast to deathcrash, Tiernan's vocals are the main character here, whilst the melancholic music washes in waves, largely shallow and sparse, but sometimes deepening into a drowning drone. If you can listen to 'Angels' without crying then you had no soul. Beyond beauty.
