"Multi-instrumentalist, producer and singer songwriter Freya Roy has shared her powerful new EP “For Who I Have Become”, featuring brand new single “No Longer My Lady”. Comprised of six tracks that blend nu-jazz, soul and electronic sounds, the project represents a transformative time in Freya’s life as she battled with chronic pain and fatigue, and her journey to making music in a happy and sustainable way. A deeply personal display of self-discovery, “For Who I Have Become” highlights the beauty in coming through dark times and expertly showcases Freya Roy’s new-found confidence as an artist. Fuelled by her engrossing vocals, sophisticated beats and lush use of electric guitar and keyboard chords, the EP is a cathartic release that’s been eight years in the making. Speaking of “For Who I Have Become”, Freya explains: "After years of struggling with my physical health, I told myself that 2022 would be the year that I put out as much music as I want, on my terms. From starting out as a guitarist, I thought this was the direction I was destined for until my health proved otherwise: I have Joint Hypermobility Syndrome which is a connective tissue disorder which affects my day to day. It causes chronic pain and fatigue, and certain things, including playing instruments, can be too strenuous on my joints and ligaments. I had to make difficult decisions on my path and give up playing some of my favourite instruments (such as classical piano and classical guitar) to save myself from pain and injury. Combining this with being in a very male-hetero, patriarchal music establishment at the age of 18, my perception on standards and what was ‘good’ or the ‘right’ thing was completely warped and damaged, and my confidence had been given a beating for not being able to physically keep up. It has since taken me years to rebuild my confidence surrounding my playing and putting myself out there. But with this, I have learnt to not compare myself to more able-people, and to use my instrument and sound as a healer and I finally found myself back on my feet. I had to say to myself 'ok, if I want to carry on doing music in a healthy and sustainable way I need to choose just a few things and do them really well'. I’ve combined all the things I CAN do to make records and beautiful music. So after a tumultuous 8 years, it only felt appropriate to name my new EP ‘For Who I Have Become’. This marks a considerable moment of change in my journey and is proof that I can still succeed despite my pain." Opening with new jazz-infused single “No Longer My Lady”, the EP starts off moody and subdued, but its sound retains an enticing glimmer of hope. Indicating that this period of change has affected Freya’s life in more ways than one, “No Longer My Lady” is about the breakdown of a relationship as Freya prepares to embrace the next chapter in her life. On the hypnotising “Calling My Name” Freya surrenders to temptation, while “Naked” exposes the raw emotion of vulnerability. It’s the slick DEACON collaboration of “Day Is Done” that signifies a positive turning point for Freya, with its warm, sun-kissed energy hinting at better days ahead. This manifests into the dreamy soundscape of “Sowing The Seeds” which is a down-tempo and soothing offering about making way for love, before the EP climaxes with “Fantasies Reimagined” featuring Gabriel Gifford and Maya Law, a spellbinding explosion of contemporary jazz enriched with brooding drum & bass influences. A stylish body of work that showcases Freya Roy’s impressive artistry, “For Who I Have Become” follows a string of continued support from BBC Introducing, BBC Radio 6 Music and BBC 1Xtra, while she recently stepped up to deliver a stunning Selector Radio Session. With further support coming from The Line Of Best Fit, CLASH, COLORS, The Pit Ldn and many more, the British-German artist is gaining positive momentum as she heads into Summer. ""
