The Australian-born, Iceland-based composer and producer Ben Frost releases his fifth studio album via Mute. The Centre Cannot Hold follows on from the release of The Threshold of Faith EP that was released earlier this year and were both recorded with Steve Albini in Chicago live to tape, with Albini slashing at them intermittently. The music exists not in space, but in a space; it is a document of an event, of a room, and of the composer within it. It is music that is not fully controlled and appears to be anxiously, often violently competing against its creator. An exercise in limitation and chromatic saturation, The Centre Cannot Hold is an attempt at transcribing a spectrum of glowing ultramarine into sound. If you enjoyed Frost's critically-acclaimed 2014 LP A U R O R A, or his music score for the TV series Fortitude, then this too will leave you a-gasp and utterly intrigued by the layers of ambient drone tones and sounds.
